Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management (GITAM), a Deemed to be University located at Visakhapatnam has two off-campuses at Hyderabad and Bengalore. With a multi-disciplinary approach, the University is offering programs at UG, PG and doctoral levels in diverse disciplines such as Technology, Medicine, Architecture, Pharmacy, Science, Management, International Business, Humanities and Law. GITAM is endowed with well qualified faculty numbering over 1100, most of them having research and industrial background. The faculty have been undertaking major research projects with financial assistance from various funding agencies in addition consultancy projects. A Central Research Laboratory was established to facilitate interdisciplinary research in thrust areas such as nano-technology, biotechnology, cancer research, urban development, integrated rural development, climate change and disaster management, etc. The University adopted Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) with focus on employability and flexibility strictly following the UGC guidelines. A proper blend of theory and practice is included in the curriculum to impart hands-on skills to the students. Employability is a major consideration in the design and development of curriculum. The programs offered are job oriented and are specially designed to meet the need for trained personnel in different sectors of the economy. GITAM’s high standards are well-recognized by multi-national corporations across the country drawing them to conduct campus interviews on a large scale. The University ensures nearly 100 percent placements to its graduates. Recognizing the holistic education the University is imparting, MHRD classified GITAM as category ‘I’ University. NAAC accredited the University with 'A+' grade. GITAM Institute of Technology, one of the constituent units of the University, has been sanctioned TEQIP- II program. DST provided financial assistance under FIST programme to seven academic departments in engineering and science colleges. UGC has accorded 12-B status to the University, which has given an added thrust to the research activities.
Department of Mechanical engineering
Established in the year 1980, The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers an UG program, two PG programs and a Ph. D program as well. The department has experienced faculty and well established laboratories. The Department has liaison with reputed industries and R&D organizations like DRDO, NSTL, and HPCL etc. Presently the department is handling several R & D projects and consultancy works.
The Department encourages best outgoing student with Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam GOLD MEDAL award every year. The Department conducts Dr. V. Bhujanga Rao Endowment Lecture every year for the benfit of research communities. the Department also facilitates with INSTRON-FATIQUE testing Laboratory funded by DST-FIST program.
The Department focuses on guiding the students towards discipline and responsibility, thus aiding in the development of model citizens for the society. The Department has a strong alumni base that who are occupying leadership positions in government, administration, industry and research organizations across the globe. The Department has been giving top priority to establish and strengthen a network of alumni, associating them in the academic activities particularly in curriculum design and campus placements.
Visakhapatnam with its long sea coast is built along the Bay of Bengal. It was once a small fishing village named after the God of Valour, Visakha. It was once a part of Kalinga empire under Ashoka, and was passed on over to Andhra kings to Pallavas, Cholas and Gangas and finally became a part of Vijayanagar empire. Visakhapatnam is famous for its natural harbor in the world with a temple, mosque and a church located on the same hills overlooking the harbor to symbolize secularism. Light house for navigational purpose situated on a huge rock of 357meters high which resembles the Dolphin nose is an attraction to the tourists. The largest ship building yard the first of its kind in India is also situated at Visakhapatnam undertaking indigenous building of ships. Towards north of Visakhapatnam there lies an ancient Temple of 11thcentury, dedicated to Lord Varaha narasimha, one of the Dasavatarams of lord Vishnu. Visakhapatnam is on the threshold of becoming one of the major industrial centres of India. Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, Bharat Heavy Plates & Vessels, Hindustan Zinc, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, Visakhapatnam Port Trust and National Thermal Power Corporation are some of the public sector enterprises situated at Visakhapatnam serving the Nation. Visakhapatnam also houses Eastern Naval Command of the Indian Navy. Famous seat of learning Andhra University is also located at Visakhapatnam. There are numerous places of visit in and around Visakhapatnam which are unique in Nature. Borra caves (Natural), Araku valley, Rishikonda beach and Kailasagiri are some of the tourist attractions.
